CHINOISERIE
What is Chinoiserie?
Originating in France, Chinoiserie is the European interpretation of Asian & Sinosphere artistic traditions in culture & decorative arts.
This exhibition is the collaboration of two close friends. Marguerite Lunungun is a
traditional Sumie artist; Lesley Gartrell is a realism painter.
MARGUERITE LUNTUNGUN
Marguerite has been practicing Sumie art for quite some time under a Taiwanese master in Sydney. She has won 4 awards in exhibitions in China & Japan. Sumie art is usually practiced on rice, bamboo or archive art paper & the main medium is ink that is ground from a charcoal stick.
Inspired by French/Asian influences, Marguerite has painted a natural selection of fish, bird & flora.
Mediums used are watercolours & acrylics with Chinese brushes.
LESLEY GARTRELL
Lesley discovered oils at the age of 13 & has been painting ever since.
Starting in a drafting field, she is obsessed with detail &neatness.
Moving into graphic design, she eventually taught painting for 25 years on the Sydney Northern Beaches.
Her fave mediums are watercolour & oilcolour.
“For this exhibition I’ve returned to my love of Utamaro from the 18th century.
I’ve always liked his interpretation of the female form & the drape of silk fabrics.
I saw Monet was also influenced by Japanese art at Les Nymphaeas in Giverney.”
METHOD
The small stretched canvases were first based in pale gold acrylic.
They have all been painted with the freshest colours of French Charvin oil color using only size 1/4 Neef slant shader.
I like to work with a dirty brush to increase the chance of tertiary colours. I wash up with olive oil.
I used Italian MaimeriBlu watercolours on 300gsm Archival paper.
Both works are done using only Size 8 Neef sable round brush.
