August 2024 “Ephemera” An exhibition by Michelle Giles

Ephemera
Originally thought to be a medical term, “lasting only one day” In modern usage “Something that lasts for a very short time” Something that is “Ephemeral” – A plant that grows, flowers and dies within a few days. Quite often used to describe paper products such as travel tickets, theatre programs, cards and letters.

Perhaps a strange choice for an exhibition title, but most items started as purchases from garage sales or op-shops, essentially the items that in our modern world we now see as replaceable??

The CONSUMMING nature of our present society where everything can be replaced by a newer upgraded model discarding items that are still useful is a cause of dismay and concern for me. We no longer replace a missing or broken button, but rather, replace a whole garment and then need matching shoes, bag and other accessories …

The simple fact that plastic has a longer life span than a human being should have been enough of a warning for all to slow the consumption and quick replacement of items around the world. I’m not anti-technology or improvements through science but I am aware that there is an ever-increasing price to be paid by future generations, probably to the point of extinction for the human collective.
Are humans to become the future ” Ephemera” in the history of the planet called Earth??
